The AmeriCorps Youth Launch Program's Youth Day
Lamoni, IA

Graceland University's AmeriCorps Youth Launch of Lamoni recognized MLK Day 2011 with Youth Day at the public library. There were 13 volunteers who contributed 39.5 hours of their time in helping make this event a success.

The event kicked off with a quick snack, sharing time, and tour of the library. Additional MLK Day activities followed in the afternoon. One volunteer spent the afternoon reading to young children about Dr. King, and the Civil Rights Movement, and talked about the impact both had on our world. Other volunteers, including three exchange students from Pakistan, helped the youth create a display to leave in the library as a reminder to their community of Dr. King's dream. Additional volunteers spent the afternoon helping older youth explore the library and promoted it as a place of entertainment and education.

In conclusion, the day had many successes as volunteers ended the day helping the youth find books and sign up for library cards, teaching them how to play chess, and recognizing the friendships they had made.
