Green Iowa AmeriCorps Weatherization Project
Cedar Falls, IA

On January 17, Green Iowa AmeriCorps collaborated with Cool Congregations for a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose life was dedicated to serving others.

A brief energy presentation was held at the Wesley Foundation in Cedar Falls with nine volunteers in attendance along with the Green Iowa team. After the presentation, everyone proceeded to a house in Cedar Falls for a much-needed weatherization. The five college students who live in the house have been paying outrageous utility costs due to numerous air drafts and leaks.

The huge house presented a number of challenges — drafty windows, unsealed openings in the basement, an open attic — and opportunities to make the home more energy efficient. As the blower-door test was conducted, it identified areas in need of insulation. Caulking windows and sealing the open holes in the basement were top priority, as the test revealed, the house was totally exchanging its warm air for cold (outside air about every half hour). Armed with insulation board, weather stripping, caulk guns, CFL light bulbs, faucet aerators and other supplies, the volunteers and team members went right to work. With so many people contributing to the effort, the weatherization was completed within four hours.

The Green Iowa team and the volunteers who participated in the service project are to be commended for a job well done; and for demonstrating how service to others can have a lasting impact.
