Governor Culver, Lt. Governor Judge Thank Iowans for Service on MLK Day After issuing a call to service, Governor Culver and Lt. Governor Judge thanked the hundreds of Iowans who participated in the 2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. This year, a record 125 service projects took place across the state. “With the help of hundreds of Iowans, we made this MLK Day the most successful day of service this state has ever seen,” said Governor Culver. “These selfless individuals stood shoulder to shoulder with their fellow Iowans for the common good. their efforts are greatly appreciated and all Iowans applaud their commitment to making a better Iowa .” Iowa 's Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration coincided with the National Day of Service called for by then President-elect Obama to honor the legacy of Dr. King. Across the nation, thousands of volunteers – including the President-elect, Vice President-elect, and their families – joined together to improve the lives of their fellow Americans. This theme was echoed in President Obama's Inaugural Address, where he called on Americans to serve their country during these challenging times. This year marked the 20th Anniversary of Iowa's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and the 14th year it has been recognized as a national day of service. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, directing the King Center and the Corporation for National and Community Service to carry out a day of service reflecting Dr. King's life and teachings. Since then, thousands have participated in the annual day of service to help those in need and improve their communities. “Thank you again to all who gave your time and your efforts to this cause that helped so many of our fellow Iowans,” said Lt. Governor Judge. “Though Martin Luther King, Jr. Day has come and gone, let us all continue to embrace the spirit of service that he embodied, and that binds all Iowans and all Americans together .” Please see the entire list of registered projects in Iowa .
