President Obama Urges Service

President Obama's administration has launched a new website -- usaservice.org -- in order to help Americans find volunteer opportunities that match their time, need, and location. The website also allows users to promote their own service events.

AmeriCorps Alums in Inaugural Parade

Nearly 150 AmeriCorps alumni marched in President Obama's Inaugural Parade last week in Washington , DC . The parade capped two days of national service events throughout the country, including the nationwide “Day of Service,” honoring Dr. Martin Luther King.

AmeriCorps Alums, an organization representing the thousands of former members of all AmeriCorps programs, was asked by the Presidential Inaugural Committee to direct the “Day of Service” as part of the President's inaugural celebration. First Lady Michelle Obama, and Jill Biden joined AmeriCorps alums and more than15,000 citizens, for “Operation Gratitude,” assembling 75,000 care packages for troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan .

“President Obama asked has asked all Americans to serve, and countless citizens nationwide are responding,” said Pete McRoberts, a former member of the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service, and AmeriCorps*NCCC alum who attended. “No one knows the spirit of service and sacrifice better than our soldiers and military families, and I was honored to join with so many committed people as we show them our thanks.”
