Requesting Funds from Embrace Iowa: 2008 IOWA DISASTER FUND

Background:
The Embrace Iowa: 2008 Iowa Disaster Fund was created to receive contributions to assist those who have experienced significant hardship as a result of the storms and flooding of 2008.  It is housed in the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation and provides statewide assistance through grants to local organizations in areas impacted by the natural disasters.

Applicants and Funding Recommendations:
Local advisory groups will be responsible for determining needs, both immediate and long-term, and to prioritize the best use of Embrace Iowa: 2008 Iowa Disaster Fund dollars in order to help individual victims, support small businesses, support service providers, and/or coordinate services within the affected area while avoiding duplication.  All funding will be distributed through organizations and/or governmental entities –individual financial support will be dispersed through these organizations.  To connect with the advisory committee in your area, please contact the local community foundation.  To find your local community foundation, visit www.iowacommunityfoundations.org.

Dollars from this fund can be dispersed to organizations/local government agencies who meet the following requirements:

  1. Umbrella or intermediary organizations re-granting for the purposes deemed priority.
  2. Nonprofit organizations: a) directly victimized by the natural disasters (loss of space/facilities); and/or, b) the larger community of nonprofit organizations affected by the disaster.
  3. Programs directly operated by nonprofit, community and religious organizations or by for-profit organizations engaged in charitable purposes.
