In the days and weeks following the tornadoes and floods, Iowans non-profit and community organizations have responded to help mobilize volunteers and provide assistance to those in need.

To support this effort, Governor Culver created the statewide flood resource center, available on-line at http://flood2008.iowa.gov. State and local volunteer opportunities are available at this site, as well as listings for goods still needed in communities affected by the weather.

The non-profit community has been a critical component in the disaster response and will remain vital as we move into the recovery stage.  Over 31,000 Iowans have volunteered nearly 775,000 hours, with the assistance of non-profit organizations.  That is over $12 million dollars of contribution to the disaster response and recovery efforts.  Additionally, $5.9 million dollars have been donated to the Embrace Iowa: 2008 Iowa Disaster Fund.

“Iowans have shown generosity, resilience, and optimism in the face of real challenges,” said Governor Culver. “We have proved once again that our ‘spirit of service’ can move mountains.”
