Special Events

The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service coordinates several special events each year focused on promoting involvement in volunteer service, national service, and recognizing outstanding volunteer efforts. As dates are confirmed for these events, information is posted on our online calendar of events.

January or February
Volunteer Iowa! This live television broadcast is very similar to a typical telethon, but financial donations are not requested or accepted. Instead, viewers are encouraged to call and pledge the number of hours they will spend volunteering during the current calendar year.

March or April
Volunteer Fair at the Capitol. Participation in this event gives nonprofit and charitable organizations the opportunity to share information about the importance of volunteers to their missions and to showcase their volunteer-related programs or projects for Iowa legislators and the public. The public is invited to visit the exhibit tables to learn about available volunteer opportunities. For more information, contact Jody Benz.

May or June
Governor’s Volunteer Awards. People or groups who volunteer their time to benefit a state or city government agency or an Iowa nonprofit organization are eligible to receive one of these awards. State and city governments and nonprofit organizations may honor their exceptional volunteers by selecting them for a Governor's Volunteer Award in one of three categories: Individual; Group; or, Length of Service. Recipients are honored during regional recognition ceremonies.

October or November
Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame. Help recognize Iowa’s unsung volunteer heroes by nominating someone you believe has demonstrated exceptional commitment to volunteerism by helping their community and those in need. Nominations may be submitted in one of the following categories: Individual; Youth; Corporation or Business; Nonprofit Organization; and, Lifetime Achievement Award. An induction ceremony is held each year in conjunction with the Iowa Conference on Volunteer Service. Details and nomination materials are available in a PDF download.
