Corporation for National and Community Service – Our Federal Partner
Federal funding for AmeriCorps is provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Each year, CNCS awards funds directly to state commissions to administer AmeriCorps*State and to be sub-granted to non-profit organizations, government agencies and schools to support AmeriCorps projects. Each year, the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service sub-grants more than $1.7 million in federal funds for program operations. These federal dollars are matched with more than $860,000 in local resources.
In 1993, CNCS was established within the National and Community Service Trust Act. The act brought the full range of domestic service programs under the umbrella of one central agency. This was formalization of AmeriCorps, a network of national service programs that engage Americans in intensive service to meet the nation’s needs in the areas of education, environment, public safety and other human needs. AmeriCorps included AmeriCorps*State and National Direct, as well as the long-established AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and AmeriCorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps).
